On Friday, the Mega Millions jackpot jumped to an estimated $579 million. According to the lottery, the jackpot will be worth an estimated $278.4 million in a lump sum payment after taxes. Below are the results of Friday’s drawing of the winning numbers, which took place shortly after 11 p.m.
“While there have been 13 December jackpot wins since Mega Millions began in 2002, only one was for more than the current estimated prize of $541 million,” the lottery stated in a press release. “A $648 million jackpot was shared by winners in California and Georgia on Dec. 17, 2013.”
Although the jackpot has not yet been claimed, a fortunate Mega Millions player from New Jersey won an incredible $1.1 billion in March. Unclaimed jackpots have happened before.

How is the Mega Millions played?
You must go to your neighborhood convenience store, gas station, or grocery store to get a ticket. However, in a few areas, you can buy tickets online. You will need to select six numbers in order to play. There will be five white balls representing the numbers 1 through 70. One number between 1 and 25 represents the gold Mega Ball.
If you think you have a bad chance, ask for a “Quick Pick” or “Easy Pick,” and the computer will come up with the numbers at random for you. Players can multiply their non-grand prize earnings by two, three, four, or five times by adding the “Megaplier” for $1. On Tuesday and Friday, the Mega multiplier is selected prior to the Mega Millions numbers.
