During his week-long visit to India, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is meeting with top government officials and business executives to talk about the company’s investment plans, mobility development, and electric vehicle strategy.
Khosrowshahi met with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday while in New Delhi to talk about Uber’s long-term goals for India.
Khosrowshahi said on X, “Honored to meet with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today in Delhi.”
“The number of earners on Uber’s platform in India has quadrupled since we last met,” he continued, alluding to a previous conversation with Sitharaman in 2022.
Uber’s strategic investment roadmap for India and the potential contribution of digital transportation platforms to economic growth, job creation, and urban connectedness were the main topics of discussion, according to Khosrowshahi.
“Uber’s strategic investment roadmap for India and how platforms like ours can be genuine partners in the journey towards #ViksitBharat2047 were topics of great discussion,” he said.
Adani Partnership Expands
Khosrowshahi also went to Ahmedabad, where he met Gautam Adani to talk about growing Uber’s collaboration with the Adani Group.
In a different post on X, Khosrowshahi said, “Great to meet Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad this morning and build on our existing partnership with the Adani Group.”
As India becomes a major hub for Uber’s innovation, he said the business will build its first data center there in collaboration with the Adani Group.
“We are setting up our first data center in the country with the Adani Group to test and deploy our tech as India quickly emerges as a leading innovation hub for @Uber,” he stated.
“This investment will help us build at scale—from India, for the world—when we’re ready later this year,” Khosrowshahi continued.
The Government Encourages EV adoption.
Khosrowshahi also met Amitabh Kant during the tour, who claimed that Uber’s expansion was a reflection of India’s shifting transportation landscape.
In a post on X, Kant stated, “What strikes me most is how Uber has evolved from a premium cab service into a true mobility platform for every Indian.”
Uber has improved inexpensive last-mile connectivity by going beyond premium ride-hailing with services like Uber Auto and Uber Bike, according to Kant.
Additionally, he emphasized Uber’s engineering and technology activities in India.
He stated, “Uber is an example of not just serving India but creating in India by building tech solutions out of world-class tech centers in India.”
“Uber’s best chapter in India is still ahead,” Kant continued.
Additionally, Khosrowshahi met with Prahlad Joshi, minister of consumer affairs, who pushed Uber to help fleet owners and drivers transition to electric vehicles.
He had come to see me. I’ve told him two things. On the fringes of the CII Annual Business Summit 2026, Joshi stated, “As one of the biggest networks, I have asked him and insisted that he should support the people, the drivers, and the owners of the Uber fleet to convert into EV vehicles.”
According to Joshi, the topics of consumer affairs and adherence to governmental instructions were also discussed.
“We informed them that the needs of the customer come first. He stated, “They have agreed and promised to self-audit everything and get back to us.”
Joshi stated that Uber India has also been requested to produce a self-auditing report on “dark patterns” and the steps taken to address such practices in a different post on X.
“And EVs too, when charged during the daytime through rooftop solar, then the cost per mile is so attractive that nobody will shift to regular vehicles,” Joshi stated, alluding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advocacy for renewable energy and electric mobility.
Rivalry in Ride-hailing Increases
During his visit to Delhi, Khosrowshahi also had a meeting with Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. According to people with knowledge of the situation, he is anticipated to visit Uber’s technological facilities in Hyderabad and Bengaluru after traveling to Mumbai.
Uber is expanding its activities in India, including ride-hailing, bike taxis, autorickshaws, logistics, and public transportation integration, at the time of the visit.
One of Uber’s biggest international markets is India. Additionally, Rapido, which has been gaining market share versus Uber and Ola, is becoming more competitive in the ride-hailing industry at the time of the visit.
