As the Walmart-owned e-commerce behemoth intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence and technology-led transformation, Flipkart has attracted key executives from firms including Coupang, Swiggy, Razorpay, Tata Digital, and Mastercard, according to several people with knowledge of the situation who spoke to Moneycontrol.
The executives will assume leadership positions in engineering, product, supply chain, and data science departments when they join the company in the coming weeks.
Flipkart has appointed Mohan Palisetti as vice president of engineering, which is one of the major hires. Palisetti most recently worked for Mastercard as a senior vice president of engineering.
Vinay Vaidya has also been named senior vice president for supplies by the corporation. Vaidya was Tata Digital’s former chief technology officer.
Nitesh Jain, a renowned architect, has also been employed by Flipkart. Jain was a senior principle engineer at Razorpay in the past.
The company has also appointed Goda Ramkumar as vice president of data science, bolstering its leadership in AI and analytics. Ramkumar most recently led Swiggy’s data science and applied AI departments.
The appointments coincide with Flipkart’s increased attempts to integrate AI into internal operations, supply chains, seller tools, and customer experiences.
Moneycontrol revealed in April that Flipkart had increased the duties of chief technology officer Balaji Thiagarajan and senior vice president Hemant Badri in order to expedite AI integration throughout the organization.
As part of the transition, Badri was given the responsibility of spearheading Flipkart’s AI Transformation Charter and collaborating with Thiagarajan to promote AI adoption across all business and technical departments.
While keeping a person in the loop for important decisions, the company has been trying to leverage AI to enhance customer discovery and buying experiences, fortify seller-facing products, automate regular procedures, and increase efficiency across teams.
Flipkart appears to be developing the leadership bench needed to carry out that approach at scale, based on the most recent additions.
The action is part of a larger competition among internet, rapid commerce, and e-commerce businesses to integrate AI into key processes, such as software development, advertising, logistics planning, inventory management, and product discovery and recommendations.
As Flipkart gets ready to list in India and strives to increase efficiency while fending off competition from Amazon, Reliance-backed ventures, and rapidly expanding quick commerce players that are increasingly branching out into general merchandise categories, it is also important to bolster its technology leadership team.
