Delhi International Airport To Expand Terminal 3 Under Long-Term Infrastructure Plan
As part of its long-term infrastructure plan, Delhi International Airport intends to significantly expand Terminal 3 (T3), which could potentially result in the phase-out of Terminal 2 (T2) by 2033.
The construction of a new Pier E at T3, which is anticipated to accommodate over 12 million passengers a year—nearly equal to T2’s existing capacity—is part of the proposed expansion. Domestic flight operations currently managed at T2 will probably be completely moved to the enlarged T3 facility once it is operational.
Terminal 2 May Continue Operations For Another Six To Seven Years
T2, which has been in operation since 1986, may continue to operate for a another six to seven years before being decommissioned, according to reports. The expansion of the airport and the increase in passenger traffic will determine how the terminal’s land is used in the future.
The expansion is a component of an updated master plan for Indira Gandhi International Airport that is being created by DIAL, a division of GMR Airports. Consolidating domestic operations, increasing operational efficiency, and getting the airport ready for future traffic growth are the goals of the plan.
Delhi Airport Developing Automated Air Train Connectivity System
Delhi Airport is concurrently developing an automated air train system that links T1, T2, and T3. The goal of the autonomous transit system, which is anticipated to go into service over the next 30 months, is to enhance passenger connectivity between ports.
However, in the face of global uncertainty impacting the aviation industry, DIAL is approaching the growth with caution. Long-term traffic estimates and airline fleet expansion plans have been affected by delays in aircraft deliveries from Airbus and Boeing, as well as geopolitical problems in West Asia and rising fuel prices.
India’s Aviation Growth Driving Airport Modernisation
The infrastructure renovation coincides with India’s aviation industry experiencing steady passenger growth, which has prompted airports all throughout the nation to make significant investments in modernization and capacity development.
