The largest single-location battery storage deployment outside of China has been completed, according to Adani Green Energy Ltd. (AGEL), with the commissioning of a cumulative 3.37 gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat.
With the most recent commissioning, 1.37 GWh further capacity was added in March 2026, bringing AGEL’s total operating battery storage capacity at Khavda to 3.37 GWh. According to the firm, the project was finished ten months after construction started.
Extension of Battery Storage Capacity
The BESS project has been implemented at Khavda, Gujarat, where AGEL is building a 30 GW renewable energy plant by 2029, of which 9.9 GW are currently in use.
The company claims that the 3.37 GWh storage system can power peak electricity requirements of cities like Indore, Chandigarh, or Goa, run more than 12 million LED bulbs continuously for up to 10 hours, or store enough electricity to support demand equivalent to nearly one million homes for a day.
The project combines energy management technologies with lithium-ion battery technology to increase grid responsiveness and operational efficiency. Renewable energy is stored in battery energy storage devices and released during periods of high demand or fluctuating generation.
According to AGEL, it intends to increase battery storage capacity by more than 10 GWh in FY27 and increase it to 50 GWh during the next five years.
