Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed under oath on Wednesday that the company’s AI chatbot, Gemini, is on track to be integrated into Apple’s Siri by mid-2025. The revelation came during antitrust proceedings led by the U.S. Department of Justice, which are probing Google’s dominance in the search engine market.
Sundar Pichai Confirms Google’s Gemini AI Will Be Integrated Into Siri by Mid-2025
Responding to DOJ attorney Veronica Onyema, Pichai stated, “Correct,” when asked about ongoing plans to embed Gemini into Apple’s operating systems. He added that negotiations with Apple are progressing and expected to conclude by mid-next year.
During his testimony, Pichai disclosed that he held conversations with Apple CEO Tim Cook specifically regarding the future of AI technology. “He [Cook] was trying to understand our plans for how we’re evolving AI technologies, our roadmap, and as part of that, we talked about the Gemini app distribution as well,” Pichai said.
Pichai also noted that Cook expressed interest in incorporating additional third-party AI models into Apple Intelligence later this year—signaling a more open ecosystem for AI on Apple devices.
Talks Have Been Ongoing Since 2024
Reports of a potential Gemini-Siri integration first surfaced in March 2024, when Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that discussions between Apple and Google were underway. According to insiders, the dialogue between the tech giants has remained active, with an agreement expected to be finalized in the near future.
The integration of Gemini into Siri would significantly boost Apple’s AI capabilities, enabling its voice assistant to process more complex queries—similar to its current partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In fact, clues of a potential collaboration surfaced as early as February 2025, when developers discovered references to “Google” as an AI model option within an iOS 18.4 beta, as reported by MacRumors.
Apple Has Hinted at Gemini Collaboration Before
Apple executives have previously signaled openness to working with Google on AI. At the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, remarked, “We want to enable users ultimately to choose the models they want—maybe Google Gemini in the future.” He later added, “We’re looking forward to doing integrations with other models, including Google Gemini.”
A finalized deal would dramatically expand the reach of Gemini, placing it directly into the hands of billions of iPhone and iPad users worldwide. Google and Apple already maintain a long-standing relationship, with Google services like YouTube and Search deeply integrated into Apple’s ecosystem. Google remains the default search engine on Safari, a central issue in the current DOJ antitrust case.
Pichai’s statement that talks may wrap up by mid-2025 hints at a potential official announcement during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June—an event where the company traditionally unveils major software updates and strategic partnerships. Notably, it was at WWDC last year that Apple announced its collaboration with OpenAI.
If finalized, the Google-Apple AI integration would mark a significant shift in the landscape of digital assistants, intensifying the competition in the fast-evolving world of consumer-facing artificial intelligence.
