Pune, Maharashtra will celebrate Army Day 2025 today, January 15, to honor and remember the city’s role in boosting the military. many historic firsts, such as robotic mules and an all-female NCC contingent, will be included in the parade.
The Indian Army’s esteemed Army Day Parade is making its debut outside of the capital city for the first time in its history in Pune, Maharashtra.
In order to decentralize national military celebrations, a custom was established in recent years, which includes the decision to commemorate Army Day outside of Delhi. The Army hopes to build stronger ties with the public and promote a better awareness of its efforts and contributions by traveling the parade around the nation.
The 2025 parade is expected to be a celebration of progress, diversity, and patriotism, featuring a number of firsts, such as robo mules and trailblazing female officers leading contingents.
Here’s a thorough look at what to expect at this momentous event.
First, though, let’s clarify what Army Day is and why it is observed.
In honor of Lieutenant General KM Cariappa, who succeeded British General Francis Roy Bucher as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949, Army Day is celebrated on January 15 of each year.
Since then, this day has been observed to honor the bravery, selflessness, and sacrifices made by Indian Army soldiers who protect the security and sovereignty of the country.
The Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi has historically hosted the primary Army Day parade, where Service Chiefs honored the history of the Indian Army. The event also includes a colorful march by soldiers and the presentation of cutting-edge weapons and equipment
The Army Day parade has spread beyond of Delhi in recent years. Bengaluru and Lucknow hosted the festivities in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Pune will host the parade for the third time this year.
However, why Pune?
Pune is a suitable candidate to host the Army Day parade because of its significant role in India’s military history and legacy.
Prestigious establishments that are essential to the country’s defense environment, such as the Southern Command Headquarters and the National Defence Academy (NDA), are located in the city.
Furthermore, Pune has traditionally been a hub for military operations, training, and strategy due to its close ties to the Maratha Empire. As a training ground for military officers and a hub for defense strategy innovation, the city has played a pivotal role in the development of India’s armed forces.
In addition to honoring Pune’s services, the Indian Army hopes to encourage young people to enlist in the military by holding Army Day there.
The Bombay Engineering Group (BEG) and Center in Pune will host the parade.
What will happen on 2025 Army Day?
According to India Today, this year’s Army Day festivities are expected to combine history and innovation, with the theme “Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena” at its core, emphasizing inclusivity, modernization, and public participation.
The Army’s dedication to demonstrating its readiness and advancement is at the center of the occasion. An amazing exhibition of domestic defense hardware, like as the Arjun Mk-1A tanks, K9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers, and cutting-edge drones created under the Make in India campaign, will be on show for visitors at the Southern Command Parade Ground.
The festivities seek to foster human connections rather than only highlight military prowess.Along with exciting cultural events, students and non-combatants can anticipate live para-jumping and combat drill exercises.
According to PTI, a 33-member Nepal Army band would also play in the parade as a sign of friendship and cultural exchange between the two countries, adding a touch of global solidarity.
This year, “robotic mules” will participate in the parade for the first time. These cutting-edge devices, built to tow bulky objects over challenging terrain, will march with their operators, mechanically precisely greeting dignitaries.
A number of handcrafted tableaux will also be included in the parade. One will honor Paralympic champions and the Army’s Mission Olympics Wing, which has assisted athletes in reaching greatness in sports like wrestling and fencing.
Additional tableaux will showcase the Army’s green activities to fight climate change, the critical contributions of its veterans, and its adoption of innovative technologies like drones and nanotechnology. The Army’s efforts to reach net-zero emissions will even be featured on one display.
Women Agniveers to take the lead in 2025
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) will have an all-girl marching group in this year’s Army Day Parade, which is a major first for women in the military.
Agniveers from the Corps of Military Police (CMP) in Bengaluru will also participate as part of an all-female force, led by Captain Sandhya Mahla.
Leading the 58-member contingent on January 15 will be a proud time for me. In an interview with the Times of India, the second-generation officer stated, “We have been practicing and perfecting our drills, and our aim is to be the best contingent of the parade.
Army Day 2025 provides an opportunity to honor, motivate, and commemorate the country’s defenders as the Indian Army moves forward with its annual plans.
